Phishing scam targets benefit plan members

Oct 04, 2024

Benefit plan members are being reminded to disregard emails claiming to offer refunds via a link.

There has been a report of a phishing attempt sent by scammers claiming to be Canada Life. Phishing refers to attempts to steal someone's sensitive information to use or sell the stolen information. Phishing emails often use logos or names of legitimate organizations to trick the recipient to click on a link or provide information like usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, or other important data.

The spam email that has been reported claims to come from Canada Life and asks the plan member to log in and do something to receive a reimbursement. Plan members should note that Canada Life would never email a plan member and ask them to log in to receive a reimbursement, as they would simply deposit the eligible reimbursement amount directly into their bank account or send a cheque to the address Canada Life has on file. If you receive any of these emails, do not follow the instructions and simply delete them.

Plan members who receive such a request or are concerned about the validity of an email are asked to contact Canada Life's Corporate Investigations team toll free at 1-877-751-3417, or via email. You can find more information about Canada Life's fraud policies and security measures on its website
